The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age

Paramount started "Girls! Girls! Girls!" on October 31, 1962 and earned rental fees of 2.6 million USD. So we can assume that it made around 5 million USD at the box office. By using the factor 15 that would be 75 million USD today with 37.5 million going to Paramount. And these are the figures for USA/Canada alone. But "Girls! Girls! Girls! was not only a commercial success. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe as "Best Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy".

The distributor didn't change the title for the German audience, because everybody knew what a "girl" was and it sounded so wonderfully American. The premier was on April 12, 1963.

Storyline

The songstress Robin wants to win the heart of Ross Carpenter (Elvis), but his big love is a yacht named Westwind. Besides that Ross invites Robin's friend Laurel to a sailing trip. On the next day Ross learns that the Westwind is about to be sold. His goal is now to buy the boat, because a long time ago he had built it with his late dad.

Production Staff

Hal B. Wallis (producer), Norman Taurog (director), Allan Weiss und Edward Anhalt (script, after a story by Allan Weiss), Joseph J. Lilley (music), Loyal Griggs (camera), Warren Low (editor).

Principal Cast

Elvis Presley (Ross Carpenter), Stella Stevens (Robin Gantner), Laurel Goodwin (Laurel Dodge), Jeremy Slate (Wesley Johnson) und Robert Strauss (Sam). The German voice of Elvis was dubbed by Rainer Brandt.

Production

After having received $500,000 and 50% of the earnings from Mirisch it must have been somewhat depressing for Elvis to work for a humble $175.000. The actress Stella Stevens also wasn't keen to do the movie, but she was employed at Paramount and finally the studio forced her to work by threatening to fire her if she refused. The production crew worked from April 9th to June 11th 1962 on the Hawaiian islands and in Los Angeles.

Hal B. Wallis stuck to the by now established concept of Elvis being a nice guy with the ability to generate music out of nowhere whenever he felt like singing a song.

Verdict

The movie is no better or worse than "G.I. Blues" or "Blue Hawaii". Once again it's a conservative, lightweight and well produced musical the whole family can enjoy.
