The ultimate site about the king of the analogue
age
Paramount's "Loving You" was released on July
9, 1957 and made 3.7 million USD on rentals,
which indicates a box office of 7.4 Million USD.
On top of that came the earnings from abroad. Of course it wasn't a miss, but nobody
could deny that "Love Me Tender" had generated
almost a million USD more. Using our factor 15
"Loving You" would have grossed 111 million USD
today with 55.5 million going to Paramount. In Germany the movie hit the cinemas
on January 17, 1958 and was entitled "Gold Aus
Heisser Kehle" which means "Gold From A Hot
Throat".

head and he is torn between Glenda and Susan, a
young singer of the show. In the end Deke and
Susan become a couple, Tex and Glenda get
together again and all live happily ever after.

Production
Colonel Parker made few mistakes, but the
contract with Paramount certainly was
substantial. The studio paid Elvis $15,000 for
the movie and was given options of six more with
a successive raise of the fee to $100,000 for
the last one. When 20th Century Fox offered this
amount for the very fist picture, Parker was
able to receive a bonus of $50,000 for "Loving
You" and also to raise the fees for the optional
projects, but still his client would be
ridiciulously underpaid whenever he worked for
Paramount until 1966.
The production went from January 21st to
March 8th 1957 and took place at the Paramount
Studios. In contrast to 20th Century Fox the
studio shot the movie in color, which was quite
expensive at the time. Remeber, back then there
was no digital technology and even to make a
photo or a film in anything else than black and
white was regarded a fancy thing. Hal Kanter,
the director of the movie, also invested some
effort and accompanied Elvis for a few days. He visited the king's final Hayride show to
see what the young man was doing on stage and
how the fans reacted to his antics. As a result
the music was presented in a very natural and
believable way, Kanter even used Elvis' real
band (Scotty Moore, Bill Black and DJ Fontana)
to portray the musicians on stage. On top of
that he put the singer's parents (Gladys and
Vernon Presley) in the audience.

Verdict
While "Love Me Tender" had been nothing
but a hastily adjusted project, "Loving You"
was tailor-made for Elvis and displayed the
image of the king of rock'n'roll on the
silver screen in grand style.
