For the 40th anniversary of "Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis" Sony Music released a Legacy Edition of the album. For the first time since March 20, 1974 the concert can be heared in its entirety and without overdubs. As a bonus the set includes a second compact disc, which features the show on March 16, 1974 in Richmond and excerpts of a rehearsal session from August 16, 1974. Even though "Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis" was constantly available in several formats since 1974, the Legacy Edition charted in Austria (#72), Swizerland (#73), Great Britain (#74) and Italy (#86). The sound carriers are housed in a digipak, which also includes a booklet of 26 pages with background information, photos, pictures of memorabilia, etc.

Sony Music Entertainment released the album digitally in 24 bit/90 khz flac. That means, if the platform of your choice supports high resolution audio, you can enjoy the tracks in the same quality Sony used to scan and master them. On Spotify, which has a market share of approximately 30% and is the only platform that publishes streaming figures, "Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis - Legacy Edition" accumulates 13 million streams.

For this re-release the concert has been remixed and remastered. It's also 100% complete and free of any additional overdubs. Compared to the previous releases this Legacy Edition is an improvement in any case. The second concert has been released before by Sony's collector's label Follow That Dream Records. Here the audio has also been enhanced. Of course it's still a mono recording, but apart from that it sounds mighty fine. The rehearsal session has nothing to do with the March tour and all the tracks have been released by FTD, too. But hell, now they are available for everybody and not just the few, who by their stuff at fan shops or buy music on physical sound carriers at all.

Verdict

Both concerts sound better than ever and are presented very well. If one is interested in "Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis", this is the version to buy. However, if you want to stream the show, you should try Matt Ross-Spang's remix on the 2024 release "Memphis". To my ears it sounds even better.
