The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age
The dvd opens with a newly edited clip of "An American Trilogy". It uses some alternative angles from the king's "Aloha" special, taped on the Hawaiian islands in January 1973.
Ooh VegasThe title song of this release also gets its own clip, this time using footage of a car driving to and through Las Vegas. The material shows a Las Vegas, that looks very different to the recent city. Back in the 70s of the past century Sin City looked rather un-impressive. However, it's always great to see footage like this, because it shows us the world as Elvis and his contemporaries experienced it.
DocumentaryThe documentary deals with the first Vegas stint of 1973. We get to hear the story, in which Elvis is attacked on stage and we experience him leaving due to voice problems, but then returning to finish the show. Of course we also see him being visited by Muhammad Ali. However, the documentary doesn't tell us anything about the king's dangerously high abuse of medication or any other troubles, that were going on behind the curtains of the Presley show.
Various 8mm FootageHere we get to see fragments of various shows. Namely the midnight show on February 10th, the dinner show on February 12th, the dinner show on February 15th, the dinner show on February 17th, the midnight show on February 17th, the dinner show on February 18th and the dinner show on February 20th. Of course we don't get to see full performances, just excerpts. But it's edited well and considering the source everything looks decent. Of course there is better 8mm material around, but I've also seen far worse. It's certainly nothing you'll watch every day, but footage like this gives you an idea of how Elvis performed and behaved at the time. It feeds your imagination while listening to audio recordings. In early 1973 Mr. Presley was as slim and slender as three years earlier, but also moved much less and appeared to be quite subdued.
Sunburst ElvisThe dvd ends with a song called "Sunburst Elvis", which glorifies this very Vegas season as well as the king himself. According to the producers of this release it is performed by Ellen Ripley, the lady who fought against the Alien in various science fiction movies. But whoever the singer is for real, it's a nice enough tune and the clip is well edited.
