The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age

The commercial flop "An American Trilogy" was followed by "Burning Love" on August 1, 1972. On the 19th of the month the track entered the "Hot 100" at number 90, had a run of 15 weekes and peaked at number 2. "It's A Matter Of Time" was listed on the "Hot Country Singles Chart" and on the "Easy Listening Chart", where it made it to number 16 and 9, respectively. In October 1972 the RIAA honored the domestic sales with a Gold Award, in 1992 the status was updated to Platinum. In Canada, Australia, Great Britain and Ireland "Burning Love" became a top 10 hit, worldwide RCA Victor was able to retail 3 million units. This amount of physical sales equals 450 million paid streams. Therefore this 45 was Elvis' most successful single since "Don't Cry Daddy", which had been released almost three years earlier. Finally the king had scored the much needed hit. Today "Burning Love" is on the top 5 of the most streamed Presley tracks on Spotify. The original version clocks in at 400 million streams, the remakes add another 30 million (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) and 1.5 million (Viva Elvis).  The b-side "It's A Matter Of Time" is far less popular and was streamed just 1.7 million times.

The photo on the cover was made during the production of "Elvis On Tour". Of course RCA Victor advertised the current album "Elvis As Recorded At Madison Square Garden" and also tried to push the dying sales of the longplayer "Elvis Now".

The single cannot be found on the streaming platforms, but both tracks have been added as bonus songs to the digital version of the album "Elvis" (1973). Originally the songs had been released on the budget album "Burning Love And Hits From His Movies", but to avoid duplication the CAMDEN release is not available for streaming.

Burning Love

Elvis recorded the rock'n'roll tune on March 28, 1972 at RCA Studio C in Hollywood/California within six takes. On April 27th Felton Jarvis added further instruments and shortened the recording of half a minute. The song was written by Dennis Linde and originally released by Arthur Alexander. Even though "Burning Love" is a straight rock song, Elvis doesn't perform it with the necessary agression. Maybe it was because of his peddled dislike of the song, maybe he simply wanted to sound like a popsinger. The studio track was released on the budget album "Burning Love And Hits From His Movies" (1972), a live version can be found on "Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite" (1973).

It's A Matter Of Time

This country-styled ballad was written by Clive Westlake, whose daughter was a well-known tv show host in Germany. Elvis sings the song with a touch of sadness in his voice, which fits the wistful melody well. He recorded "It's A Matter Of Time" on March 29, 1972 at RCA Studio C in Hollywood/California and approved the 5th attempt for release. Felton Jarvis added strings and horns, but didn't meet the king's taste and therefore had to remove his overdubs. The song was also issued on CAMDEN's "Burning Love And Hits From His Movies" album.

Verdict

The retro rocker met the taste of the time, the number one spot of the "Hot 100" was blocked by no less a figure than Chuck Berry. The single offers two very different songs, both are performed well.
