On January 4, 1972 RCA Victor released "Until It's Time For You To Go" / "We Can Make The Morning". It entered the "Hot 100" on the 29th of the month at number 80, had a run of nine weeks and peaked at number 40. On February 12th the recorded was also listed on the "Easy Listening Chart". Here it stayed for seven weeks and peaked at number 9. On March 4th "Until It's Time For You To Go" finally entered the "Hot Country Singles Chart", too. But it was listed just twice and never made it past number 68. In Great Britain the single was far more successful and became a top 5 hit. In total RCA Victor wasn't able to sell more than a million copies, which equals 150 million paid streams. The new year didn't bring the long-awaited change, Elvis still seemed unable to score a hit.

Of course this single is not available on the streaming platforms, but both tracks can be found on the album "Elvis Now" (1972). In 2016 the complete Presley catalogue was restored and remastered by Vic Anesini for a boxed set of 60 compact discs called "The Album Collection". Sony Music Entertainment provides the streaming platforms with the same versions of the individual tracks, albeit in 24 bit/90 khz flac. That means, if the platform of your choice supports high resolution audio, you can enjoy the songs in the same quality Sony used to scan and master them. On Spotify, which has a market share of approximately 30% and is the only platform that publishes streaming figures, "Until It's Time For You To Go" accumulates 2.2 million streams, "We Can Make The Morning" hasn't even passed the million mark.

The unflattering photo had been shot during the "Elvis Summer Festival 1971" in Las Vegas. Better pictures from this season later appeard on the albums "Elvis Now" and "Elvis Sings Hits From His Movies - Volume 1". The red banner on the front cover advertised the forthcoming album "Elvis Now", on the back the next but one longplayer "He Touched Me" was promoted.

Until It's Time For You To Go

The ballad was recorded on May 17, 1971 at RCA Studio B in Nashville/Tennessee within eight takes. The final one was enhanced with strings on May 22nd. Because Elvis wasn't satisfied with the result, he recorded another ten takes on June 8, 1971. This time the rhythm was emphasized a bit more. In the end he went for his first attempt. The song, written and first released by Buffy-Sainte-Marie, describes a relationship, which is not considered to last long. Elvis sings very emotional, sometimes his voice even sounds fragile. In general I like "Until It's Time For You To Go", but it's played a tad too slow for my taste. I like the live versions better.

We Can Make The Morning

Because several magnetic tapes are lost, we don't know how many takes Elvis recorded. But it's safe to say that "We Can Make The Morning" was taped on May 20, 1971 and overdubbed on May 25th (strings) and June 21st (horns and additional strings). The singer offers himself to a lady for a night as a strong shoulder to lean on (and maybe some other things), but sounds a little bit weary. In the summer of 1970 Elvis certainly would have performed "We Can Make The Morning" better. However, even in May 1971 he still sounds impressive at times.

Verdict

Both songs are ok, but certainly not great. Besides that, they are not really custom made for the radio.
