The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age
The follow up to "Clean Up Your Own Backyard" was released on August 26, 1969 and featured the songs "Suspicious Minds" and "You'll Think Of Me". On September 13th the single entered Billboard's "Hot 100", had a run of 15 weeks and became a number one hit. It took just two months to surpass the million mark and to receive a Gold Award from the RIAA. Twentythree years later the organization updated the status to Platinum. "Suspicious Minds" entered the top 10s of several European countries, too. Worldwide RCA Victor was able to retail 7 million units, which equals 1.05 billion paid streams. Therefore the commercially weakened king delivered one of his best selling singles and his first number one hit since 1962. With way over half a billion streams "Suspicious Minds" is the third most requested Presley song on Spotify. The remakes are far less popular. The version with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra clocks in at 8 million streams, the incarnation presented on the "Viva Elvis" album accumulates 6 million streams.
The sleeve presented Elvis in a new look. His hair and his sideburns were longer than ever, in general the king would stick to this appearance until his death. The picture was made in October 1968 to promote the movie "The Trouble With Girls (And How To Get Into It)". On the front RCA Victor promoted the new cassette format (a compact magnetic tape), the back advertised the current budget album "Elvis Sings Flaming Star And Others" and also mentioned the fact, that this longplayer included the performance of "Tiger Man", which substituted "Blue Christmas" in the recent re-run of the tv show "SINGER presents Elvis".
The single is not available on the streaming platforms, but "Suspicious Minds" was added to the digital version of "From Elvis In Memphis" (1969) and "You'll Think Of Me" can be heared on the album "Back In Memphis" (1970).
Suspicious Minds
The song was recorded on January 22, 1969 at American Sound Studio in Memphis/Tennessee. The 8th take was selected for post-production and was enhanced with Elvis' harmony vocals (January 22nd), background singing (January 24th) and strings (May 7th). To match the arrangement of the live performances Bill Porter adjusted the song on August 7th at United Recording Studio. He added horns and faded the ending in and out several times. Because all eight tracks had been used by Chips Moman and Felton Jarvis, the mixing was done with the musicians playing live. The procedure was gone through for the mono version as well as the stereo version. RCA re-released the studio cut on the boxed set "Worldwide 50 Gold Award Hits - Volume 1" (1970). Live versions can be heared on the albums "From Memphis To Vegas / From Vegas To Memphis" (1969), "Elvis As Recorded At Madison Square Garden" (1972) and "Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite" (1973). "Suspicious Minds" was written and released for the first time by Mark James. But Elvis made the song his own so much, that the original version is almost forgotten.
You'll Think Of MeIn the early 1960s Mort Shuman and Doc Pomus had delivered a few outstanding songs, now Elvis was recording one of Shuman's compositions again. The narrator tells his lady, that he won't be faithful and will certainly leave her someday. The king manages the trick to deliver the cynical asshole-lyrics in a warm-hearted and sensitive way. The contrast of the lyrics and the music and vocal performance is just great. I like "You'll Think Of Me" very much. Elvis recorded it on January 14, 1969 at American Sound Studio within 23 takes. The track also features a sitar, which is very unusual for the king. On January 21st Elvis re-recorded his vocals, three days later harmony vocals were added. On May 5th and 6th the track was further enhanced with strings and horns. In November 1969 RCA released "You'll Think Of Me" on the double album "From Memphis To Vegas / From Vegas To Memphis", two years later it was re-released on the boxed set "The Other Sides - Worldwide Gold Award Hits Volume 2".
"Suspicious Minds" is a song for eternity and "You'll Think Of Me" also belongs to my personal favorites. This single is a classic.
