To promote the MGM movie "The Trouble With
Girls (And How To Get Into It)" RCA Victor
released the single "Clean Up Your Own Backyard"
/ "The Fair Is Moving On" on June 17, 1969. The
single entered Billboard's "Hot 100" on July 5th
at number 90, was listed for eight weeks and
peaked at number 35. On August 2nd the magazine
also listed the record on the "Easy Listening
Chart". It reached number 37, but vanished after
just two weeks. Finally "Clean Up Your Own
Backyard" entered the "Hot Country Singles
Chart" on August 16th. It stayed for three weeks
and stalled at number 74. In 1992 the RIAA
honored the domestic sales of 500,000 units with
a Gold Award, worldwide the single sold a
million copies. Translated to the present this
would be 150 million paid streams. Compared to
the previously released "In The Ghetto" / "Any
Day Now" this was a drop in sales of 73%.
Commercially Elvis' comeback still was fragile.
On Spotify none of the tracks made it past the
million mark.
The sleeve was once again designed with a
promo picture for "SINGER presents Elvis". The
front cover advertised the forthcoming movie
"The Trouble With Girls (And How To Get Into
It)", the backside promoted the current "From
Elvis In Memphis" longplayer.
Originally RCA Victor had planned to coincide
with the release of the accordant movie, but all
of a sudden MGM postponed the flick from late
May to early September to take advantage of the
media hype surrounding Elvis' stage comeback at
the International Hotel in Las Vegas. But I
seriously doubt that the availability of the
movie would have changed anything regarding the
sales. The people were simply tired of the
king's movies. This was also proven in
September, when MGM presented the film with the
headline "Elvis '69" and in direct connection to
the live shows, but still failed commercially.
The single is not available on the streaming
platforms, but "Clean Up Your Own Backyard" can
be found on the album "Almost In Love" (1970)
and "The Fair Is Moving On" is featured on "Back
In Memphis" (1970).
Clean Up Your Own Backyard
This song, written by Mac Davis and Billy
Strange, is one of the king's best movie tunes
and certainly wouldn't have been out of place on
a regular studio album. It was recorded on
October 23, 1968 at United Recorders in
Hollywood/California within ten takes. The
postproduction was done on May 8, 1969 at RCA
Studio A in Nashville/Tennessee. In the summer
of 1970 CAMDEN released "Clean Up Your Own
Backyard" on a budget album named "Almost In
Love".
The Fair Is Moving On
Elvis recorded this ballad on February 21, 1969
at American Sound Studio in Memphis/Tennessee.
Even though the first take became the basis of
the master, the king had to tape several vocal
repairs. Further instruments and voices were
added on March 25, 1969. The sentimental song,
in which the singer tells his girl, that he will
move on with the fair and will have another girl
in the next town, was written by Guy Fletcher
and Doug Flett. "The Fair Is Moving On" was
later also released on the double album "From
Memphis To Vegas / From Vegas To Memphis"
(1969).
Verdict
This is another strong single with two
very good performances. Unfortunately the
audience was done with Presley's movie tunes
and didn't even bother to listen. Today the
songs are somewhat forgotten by many fans
and critics, but that doesn't say anything
about the quality.
