Verdict
With a tender ballad and a dramatic western tune the single offered two good and very different songs. Unfortunately they were overlooked at the time.

"Memories" / "Charro!" was released on February 25, 1969. On March 22nd "Memories" entered the "Hot 100" as well as the "Easy Listening Chart" and was listed on both for seven weeks. On the "Hot 100" the song peaked at number 35, on the "Easy Listening Chart" it reached the top 10 and made it to number seven. On April 19th "Memories" also entered the "Hot Country Singles Chart", but never made it past number 56. Worldwide RCA Victor was able to sell a million copies, which translates to 150 million paid streams. Compared to the previous release it was a slump in sales of more than 50%. Today "Memories" has gained popularity. On Spotify the original recording accumulates 10 million streams, the remake with the added sounds of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was requested 5.5 million times. Unfortunately that doesn't apply to "Charro!" since it generated just half a million streams.
Once again RCA Victor used a promo photo for "SINGER presents Elvis". The front cover promoted the accordant soundtrack album as well as the forthcoming long player "From Elvis In Memphis". The backside advertised the western movie "Charro!".
The single is not available on the streaming platforms. However, "Memories" can be found on the album "Elvis" (1968) and "Charro" on the budget release "Almost In Love" (1970).
Memories
The singer thinks about his lost love in an almost poetic way. The rhythm track was recorded on June 23, 1968 at Western Recorders in Hollywood/California within four takes. On the next day Elvis added his voice, which took him two attempts. In August and September 1969 the king performed the ballad by Billy Strange and Mac Davis live, but the accordant recordings were not released during his lifetime.
Charro! The title song of Elvis' third and final western movie was also written by Strange/Davis. The orchestra arrangement was done by the great Hugo Montenegro. "Charro!" was recorded on October 15, 1968 at the Samuel Goldwyn Studio in Hollywood/California. The musicians needed five attempts for the rhythm track, Elvis vocal-part was spliced of the takes 5 and 9. The orchestra was overdubbed in various steps between November 25th and 27th.
