The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age

On September 3, 1968 RCA Victor  released "Almost In Love" / "A Little Less Conversation" to promote Elvis' forthcoming movie "Live A Little, Love A Little". Twentyfive days later "Almost In Love" entered Billboard's "Hot 100" at number 99, but left the charts after just two weeks and never made it past number 95. "A Little Less Conversation", the supposed b-side, was favored by the radio djs and therefore peaked at number 68. But of course even this chartposition was abysmal for a Presley record, just like the domestic sales of 200,000 units. Abroad also nobody seemed to care, in total the record barely sold half a million copies, which translates to 75 million paid streams. Nowadays the situation has changed. Fueled by the success of the remake ("Elvis vs JXL: A Little Less Conversation" accumulates more than 225 million streams on Spotify) Elvis' original recording was streamed 41 million times and therefore made it on the top40 of Spotify's most streamed Presley songs. However, "Almost In Love" is as irrelevant now as it was back then and clocks in at 600,000 streams.

For the sleeve RCA Victor used a promo photo for "Live A Little, Love A Little". In contrast to the previous years the king now looked modern and happy. Of course Colonel Parker didn't forget to make sure the label promoted the accordant motion picture.

On the streaming platforms the tracks can be found on the album "Almost In Love" (1970).

Almost In Love

The music track was recorded on March 7, 1968 at Western Recorders in Hollywood/California, four days later the king added his vocals. The master finally was combined of the takes 4 (music track) and 3 (vocal track). At first "Almost In Love" was available on this single only, in 1970 RCA's own budget label CAMDEN made the song the title track of an album. The ballad was written by Randy Starr, who based it on Luiz Bonfa's "Moonlight In Rio". To me "Almost In Love" is some kind of elevator music (aka lounge music), which was a fab of the time. It's certainly not bad and also well performed, but it just doesn't stay with you.

A Little Less Conversation

Elvis recorded the song on the same day, but this time in form of a live performance with the band. Take 16 was chosen to be the master, for unknown reasons CAMDEN used take 10 on the album "Almost In Love". The rhythm of "A Little Less Conversation" is funky and the lyrics are quite frank. I like the song very much. In 2002 a tv commercial for NIKE featured a remix/remake by Tom Holkenborg which was released by BMG and entered the UK Charts at number 1. Within a few weeks "Elvis vs JXL: A Little Less Conversation" made it to the top of the charts in 19 other countries and opened up a complete new audience for the king.

Verdict

Musically Elvis had returned to the present, but the audience was still ignoring him. Especially "A Little Less Conversation" is very good, without doubt it's one of the best movie tunes of the king.
