The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age

On April 14, 1964 RCA Victor threw a single with two well known songs on the market. "Kiss Me Quick" entered Billboard's "Hot 100" on May 2nd at number 79. In total it had a run of 6 weeks and peaked at number 34. On the domestic market the record sold 200,000 copies, worldwide half a million units were retailed. According to the RIAA this amount of physical sales matches 75 million paid streams. Even though the sales were just a quarter of the previously released single "Kissin' Cousins" / "It Hurts Me", it was a good bargain. Simply, because both tracks were available since 1962 on the album "Pot Luck With Elvis" and therefore already had earned their costs back. On Spotify "Kiss Me Quick" was streamed more than 8 million times, "Suspicion" got over 11 million requests.

The picture on the cover was taken in 1963 to promote the movie "Kissin' Cousins". The backside of the sleeve lists the other "Gold Standard Singles" of the king.

The single is not available on the streaming platforms, but both tracks can be heared on the album "Pot Luck With Elvis" (1962). At the time this 45 was released, because Terry Stafford had scored a top 5 hit with "Suspicion". Because "Kiss Me Quick" had been popular in Europe, it was decided to couple the songs and jump on the bandwagon.

Kiss Me Quick

Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman had written "Kiss Me Quick" for The Flamingos, who rejected the song. Mort Shuman once said, that "Kiss Me Quick" was his worst song and he wondered why Elvis recorded it. In contrast to the writer I like the song very much. It's fluffy, dancable radio-popmusic. The people at RCA thought similarly and released it on singles in serveral countries. In Great Britain "Kiss Me Quick" / "Something Blue" peaked at number 14, in West-Germany "Kiss Me Quick" / "Night Rider" made it to number 3 of the charts. In Belgium, Norway and Denmark "Kiss Me Quick" became a top 5 hit. By the way: "Kiss Me Quick" was recorded on June 25, 1961. The 12th take became the master.

Suspicion

Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman wrote this popsong in Mediterranean sytle, in which the narrator voices his jealousy to his girlfriend. On March 19, 1962 Elvis recorded five takes and three workpart-takes, the master is a splice of take 5 and workpart-take 3.

Verdict

The single was a rush job, but of course that doesn't change the quality of the content.
