The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age
On February 7, 1961 RCA Victor released "Surrender" / "Lonely Man". On the 20th of the month the a-side entered Billboard's "Hot 100" at number 24, had a run of 12 weeks and became a number 1 hit. "Lonely Man" also made it on the hitparade. Starting on February 27th the ballad was listed five times and climbed from number 84 to number 32. The RIAA honored the domestic sales in 1992 with a Platinum Award. In Great Britain "Surrender" also became a number one hit. When BMG released the song again in 2005 (this time in the by then popular cd format), it peaked at number 2 of the UK Charts. Worldwide RCA Victor was able to retail 6 million copies, which translates to 900 million paid streams. In 1960/61 the conservative Elvis was even more successful than the rock'n'roll king of the 1950s. Having sold so many physical units one might expect way above 100 million streams on Spotify, but surprisingly "Surrender" clocks in at around 30 million requests. So the track definitely lost some of its appeal. However, "Lonely Man" didn't even pass the million mark.
The sleeve was designed with one of the promo photos for 20th Century Fox' musical drama "Wild In The Country", which featured "Lonely Man".
Today the single cannot be found on the streaming platforms. But "Surrender" is included on the album "Elvis' Golden Records - Volume 3" (1963) and "Lonely Man" can be heared on "Elvis' Gold Records - Volume 4" (1968).
Surrender
After "It's Now Or Never" turned out to be a sales monster, Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman used the same principle and turned "Torna A Surriento" into "Surrender". Elvis recorded it on October 30, 1960 at RCA Studio B in Nashville/Tennessee. First he taped nine takes of the song, then he produced eight workpart-takes. The master was spliced of take 4 and workpart-take 8. With mediterranean music and dramatic vocals the singer tries to convince a lady to succumb to him. RCA Victor later re-released "Surrender" on the longplayer "Elvis' Golden Records - Volume 3" (1963) and the boxed set "Worldwide 50 Gold Award Hits - Volume 1" (1970).
Lonely ManBennie Benjamin and Sol Marcus wrote this beautiful ballad for the movie "Wild In The Country", Elvis taped the song on November 7, 1960 at RCA Studio B in Nashville/Tennessee within 13 takes. He sounds so sad and vulnerable, that one believes him every word. In 1968 RCA Victor also released the track on the album "Elvis' Gold Records - Volume 4" and again in 1971 on the boxed set "The Other Sides - Worldwide Gold Award Hits Volume 2".
