The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age
The session times are not known, but the scheduling might have been similar to the previous days. I guess everyone was certain, that the remaining five songs would be taped this night and the material could be given to the post-production.
Golden Coins (take 1-16 + master)
The first take is not more than Elvis singing "Say you're mine". Number 2 appears to be more successefull, but then the king stumbles upon the words and ends the procedure after not even one minute. Three also doesn't turn out to be a lucky number since Elvis doesn't come any further than during take 1. But then everything falls into place and a complete performance is put on tape. It's more calm than the well known master and the ending is a bit different, too. In general I like this more quiet approach better. After another false start of just a few seconds, the king manages another complete rendition. This time the percussion arrangement has been slightly changed. There's another short false start and another complete performance. In general it's a good one, but since Elvis messed up the timing after the break, at least one more take is necessary. Once again the king doesn't sing more than "Say you're mine" and stops the procedure with a "Whoops!". The 10th walkthrough is another complete performance, but Presley still has trouble with the correct length of the break. The next try also is a complete rendition of the song. The takes 12 to 15 are just a bunch of false starts, none of them lasting longer than half a minute. Finally the 16th try turns in another complete performance. Since the ending didn't work out all that great, the master was spliced of take 16 and take 11.
Animal Instinct (take 1-6)During the first try Elvis isn't sure of the melody and stops the take by saying "Hold it, hold it. Is that right?". After two more false starts he manages to tape three complete takes. During the 5th one he unfortunately drifts off the melody and the drumming also appears to be quite wild in places. But number 6 is good enough to be released and so the group moves on to the title song of the movie.
Harem Holiday (take 1-2)Take number 1 is stopped after barely a minute, but number two evolves in a complete rendition. It sounds as if the insecurities could have been ironed out within another take or two, but Presley doesn't want to continue the session and leaves. And so it's up to the band and harmony singers to tape music tracks of the remaining two songs "Go East, Young Man" and "Mirage".
Go East, Young Man (music track: take 1-3)The musicians have little trouble to record the unimaginative pap. After a false start they perform two complete renditions with the final one being used for overdubbing. It's interesting to note, that in the background we can hear someone singing a guide vocal (the part Elvis would sing later).
Mirage (music track: take 1-5)Here the band appears to have a problem to find into the song since they produce four short false starts in a row. The 5th take finally turns out to be a complete performance, which is considered to be good enough to work with.
