The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age
Here we have the dress rehearsal, staged on January 12th and first released in 1988 on an album called "The Alternate Aloha".
Also Sprach Zarathustra
The orchestra plays an excerpt of Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra". Then the band takes over with the "Opening Riff" and Elvis appears on stage. Charlie hands him his guitar and the show is underway.
See See RiderThe performance is quite similar to the one from January 14th.
Burning LoveHere Elvis' voice sounds more powerful, but he messes up the lyrics. After having finished the song, the king admits "I forgot all the words". Two days later the lyrics would be written on huge cards, so he could read them.
SomethingBecause Elvis sings the chorus just once, this rehearsal version is a tad shorter.
You Gave Me A MountainThe power ballad is performed a tad better. The king's voice is stronger and he moves more to the beat.
Steamroller BluesOnce again Elvis has some problems with the lyrics. He leaves out the verse with the "cement mixer" and sings the one with the "napalm bomb" twice. But nevertheless this is the better rendition. The king's voice sounds better and he injects more energy. To these ears James Burton's guitar solo also sounds better.
My WayElvis has problems to find into the song and starts off-beat. But otherwise his rendition is as good as the one from January 14th.
Love MeIt's a routine performance of the oldie.
It's OverDuring the televised concert Elvis continues with "Johnny B. Goode". The rehearsal show was shorter than expected and so some additional songs were added. The Chuck Berry tune was one of them. "It's Over" is performed very well, maybe the version from January 14th is a little bit better.
Blue Suede ShoesIt's another fast, but not furious rendition of an oldie. No real difference to the main concert.
I'm So Lonesome I Could CryThe rehearsal version is as great as the main performance.
Hound DogFor the "real" show Elvis included "I Can't Stop Loving You" between "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and "Hound Dog". The oldie is sung without investing too much energy.
What Now My LoveThe power ballad is performed better than on January 14th. Elvis voice sounds stronger and the notes are held longer.
FeverIt's a good and entertaining rendition, no big difference to the main concert.
Welcome To My WorldOnce again Elvis doesn't know the lyrics too well. The mixes them up and at times he just mumbles something.
Suspicious MindsThe performance more or less mirrors the one from January 14th, but Elvis leaves out the "I hope the suit don't tear up, baby" joke.
IntroductionsCompared to the main performance Elvis appears a lot less nervous.
I'll Remember YouThe king is a tad better here, because his voice sounds stronger.
An American TrilogyThe medley of "Long Tall Sally" and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" is missing, because it was included after the dress rehearsal was considered to be about ten minutes too short. "An American Trilogy" is performed very well, even though the flutist misses a note.
A Big Hunk O' LoveOnce again the rehearsal performance surpasses the televised one. I guess everyone was less nervous and therefore acted more freely.
Can't Help Falling In Love
It's the typical closer, no better or worse than
any other rendition of the tune.
