The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age

On time for Christmas 2017 Follow That Dream Records issued a collector's edition of "Kissin' Cousins". Apart from the first releases of this kind FTD had always included two compact discs, but this time there was so little material in the vaults that a single sound carrier was enough. The disc is filled with the tracks of the original album, a bunch of unedited masters (the same stuff with longer running times), some alternate vocal overdubs, the pure music tracks and a performance of "Pappy Won't You Please Come Home" by Dolores Edgin. The recordings were mixed and mastered by Vic Anesini and Sebastian Jeansson. As usual the cd was housed in a 5" digi-pak and accompanied by a booklet. Even though streaming had overtaken the physical sales by 2017, Follow That Dream Records didn't distribute "Kissin' Cousins" digitally and hasn't done so far.

As usual I just review the material not available on the original album. For a review of the classic "Kissin' Cousins" long player just tap HERE.

Kissin' Cousins (Number 2) (unedited master)

The take is announced...and stopped because Elvis is fooling around. The song runs almost a minute longer here, because back in 1963 the final verse had been cut.

Catchin' On Fast (unedited master)

The same applies to "Catchin' on Fast". Once again we hear the count-in and once again a verse was cut before release.

Anyone (Could Fall In Love With You) (take 2)

The music track is the same, but here we get Elvis' second attempt to overdub his voice. The third one became the master.

Kissin' Cousins (hillbilly vocal)

The song is supposed to be a duet between Josh Morgan and Jodie Tatum. So Elvis recorded the song twice, one version for every role in the movie. Here we get the version in the overdone southern accent (Jodie Tatum).

Kissin' Cousins (regular version)

Here Elvis performs the song in his usual style (Josh Morgan).

Barefoot Ballad (vocal overdub take 2 & pickup take 4)

Once again Elvis performs as Jodie and therefore sings a bit coarse and with an overdone southern accent. Because the king looses track somewhere in-between, a pickup take was produced. The music is very quiet, so I guess we only hear what bled into the microphone from Elvis' headphones.

Barefoot Ballad (instrumental)

This track was recorded to accessorize certain scenes of the movie.

There's Gold In The Mountains (instrumental)

The same applies to this recording.

Pappy Won't You Please Come Home

In the movie it looks as if the actress Glenda Farrell sings the song, but in fact we hear the singer Dolores Edgin. She recorded the track on September 29, 1963 within six takes.

Rhythm Tracks/Music Tracks

Here we get the pre-produced music tracks to "There's Gold In The Mountains", "One Boy, Two Little Girls", "Once Is Enough", "Tender Feeling", "Kissin' Cousins (Number 2)", "Smokey Mountain Boy", "Catchin' On Fast", "Barefoot Ballad", "Anyone (Could Fall In Love With You)", "Kissin' Cousins".

Tender Feeling (take 1 - vocal only)

After a truckload of instrumentals we get to hear the opposite: Just Elvis' vocals. There is also a tiny bit of music in the background, but I guess it came from the king's headphones and was bleeding into the microphone.

Verdict

Of course the songs don't get any better, but the unedited master takes sound better and Follow That Dream Records presents all the stuff that's in the vaults. From that point of view "Kissin' Cousins" is a winner.
