Verdict
Even though FTD didn't have much to work with, they managed to present an interesting collector's edition of "Girls! Girls! Girls!".

The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age
Fourtyfive years after the original album Follow That Dream Records released a collector's edtion of "Girls! Girls! Girls!". As usual it's a 7" digipak including a booklet with background information, pictures, etc. But this time FTD just included a single compact disc, simply because the reels with the outtakes cannot be found. However, the available stuff was mastered and mixed by Vic Anesini and Sebastian Jeansson.
I will focus on the tracks, that are not on the original album. If you want to read a review of RCA's longplayer as released back in 1962, just tap HERE.
Mama
This very short ballad, its running time is just a minute, was written by Charles O' Curran and Dudly Brooks. Elvis recorded the song on March 28, 1962 within 10 takes. At the time it wasn't released on the "Girls! Girls! Girls!" album, but in 1970 CAMDEN edited a master of the Presley version and a second performance by The Amigos and included the result on the budget lp "Let's Be Friends". The original version was released for the first time in the 1990s on a cd called "Elvis Double Features: Kid Galahad & Girls! Girls! Girls!".
Plantation RockBill Giant, Bernie Baum and Florence Kay wrote the "Plantation Rock" for the movie "Girls! Girls! Girls!". Elvis taped it on March 28, 1962, but in the end the track was neither used in the movie or on the soundtrack album. Strangely though it was not even issued on one of CAMDEN's cheapie longplayers. Finally RCA released the song in the 1980s on the album "A Legendary Performer - Volume 4".
Dainty Little Moonbeams / Girls! Girls! Girls! This medley was also recorded on March 28th. Elvis sings a bit of "Dainty Little Moonbeams", which is followed by the end title version of "Girls! Girls! Girls!". It was released for the first time on the album "Elvis Double Features: Kid Galahad & Girls! Girls! Girls!".
A Boy Like Me, A Girl Like You (takes 1 & 2)Elvis fears to fail on the line "...and this ordinary world becomes a wonderland" and rehearses the part with the band. It works well, but then a musician makes a mistake and the take has to be canceled. The king obviously didn't like the tune too much, because he says "We can't spent too much time on this". The second attempt is a complete performance.
Mama (takes 1-4)The first take is nothing but a note played on the piano and the words "an angel". And even the second word is not finished by Elvis. The second attempt is a complete performance, but there was a distortion. Take 3 is a complete one, too, and sounds quite well. The fourth try turns out to be unreleasable shortly before the end of the performance, because Elvis' jacket produces a noise.
Thanks To The Rollin' Sea (take 3)Compared to the master Elvis sounds a little reluctant here.
Where Do You Come From (take 13)In general the performance is similar to the master, but the king's breath control isn't perfect.
Earth Boy (movie version - takes 2 & 4)After two minutes Elvis fluffs his part and the take is canceled. The fourth take is just the song's finale. At this point it was decided to splice the master.
We'll Be Together (takes 8 & 10)Even though it's the 8th attempt, Elvis has trouble with the timing. The take is canceled after the percussionist made a mistake. Take number ten sounds very good, which the king comments with "almost".
Mama (takes 5-8)Elvis sings "an angel sent from above is..." before the engineer interrupts him. The king "answers" with a burp! The takes six to eight are complete performances.
I Don't Wanna Be Tied (takes 10 & 8)Ernst Jorgensen, the producer of this set, has switched the order of the takes to present a false start followed by a complete performance. Elvis ends take number ten after just a few words by saying "hold it". Two attempts earlier the song was performed in its entirety, but the pianist made a mistake, because he continued to play during the "elvis ending".
A Boy Like Me, A Girl Like You (takes 3 & 4)The announcement of the producer is followed by a spacy sound, obviously some mistake of the engineer. Afterwards the musicians fail to start the song properly. Elvis comments "They were just trying the intro". By take number four the intro still doesn't work well, but then the group manages a complete performance.
Thanks To The Rollin' Sea (take 10)For the movie "Thanks To The Rollin' Sea" was just performed by Elvis, the harmony singers and an accustic guitar.
Plantation Rock (take 17 & insert take)During the recording process some noise can be heared, which causes Elvis to restrain his laughter. The take is canceled and it's decided not to do the complete song again, but just the ending.
Mama (take 9)It's another complete performance.
Mama (performed by The Amigos)Now the song is recorded without Elvis, but I neither like the performance of The Amigos, nor their bad English. It's even worse than mine!
Mama (instrumental)Here we have an instrumental version of "Mama".
Mama (lp master)For the release on the CAMDEN album "Let's Be Friends" the 10th take of Elvis' performance and the solo version of The Amigos was combined.
