The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age

On August 3, 2010 Warner Brothers released a hd version of "Elvis On Tour". In contrast to the previous concert documentary "That's The Way It Is" this was not a remake, but a remastered version of the original movie. The only difference is the intro, during which we get to hear "Don't Be Cruel" instead of "Johnny B. Goode" due to copyright reasons. It is said, that Chuck Berry simply refused to give permission to use his track on the blu ray incarnation of the movie. The 50th anniversary release also includes a blu ray, but it's just a plain copy of the original outing.

Video

The image fluctuates between steadily sharp and abundantly soft, though much of the material falls into a satisfying middle ground. Colors aren't aggressively vibrant but they're steady and honest, particularly as seen on Elvis' jumpsuits. The picture is a tad grainy all throughout the movie. The original footage is not the best, but the 1080p transfer is a major improvement over previous and certainly looks great considering the source.

Audio

The audio is presented in DTS 5.1 and generally sounds fine. However, everytime Elvis starts to belt out certain lines or the trumpets are blaring at full throttle, the levels are somewhat muted. Maybe the producers wanted to save old and sensitive people from getting shocked and spilling their tea.

Verdict

While the audio could have been mixed with more oomph, the video looks fine for what it is. You simply cannnot get gold out of a silver mine. Despite all the shortcomings I enjoy the hd version of "Elvis On Tour" very much.
