The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age

A year after the hd release of "Love Me Tender", in 2014, 20th Century Fox followed with "Flaming Star", the second movie Elvis had made for the studio.

Video

In contrast to Paramount's "Blue Hawaii" release the colors are not all that bright and vivid here. Don't get me wrong, it all looks natural but you won't get to see the classic Metrocolor look of the time. In general everything is clear and detailed, just a few of the long distance shots look a tad soft. There is no dust or grain, so in general the 1080p/AVC transfer looks very good for a movie from 1960 and certainly can be considered to be a huge improvement over all previous releases.

Audio

The original soundtrack as well as the German and French incarnations are delivered in DTS HD 5.1. The surround mix adds some ambience, but as expected there is not much to do for the rears and the subwoofer. There is no hiss or any other distortion, so in general it's a solid effort from 20th Century Fox.

Extras

The special features include an Isolated Score Track in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 by Cyril Mockridge. There is also an audio commentary with Film Historians Lem Dobbs and Nick Redman. Lastly there are the film’s Original Theatrical Trailers.

Verdict

The hd presentation of "Flaming Star" scores with great video and a solid 5.1 soundtrack. On top of that we get some nice extras.
