In the early evening hours of April 28, 1977
the king's private jet landed at the Austin
Straubel Field in Green Bay/Wisconsin. Elvis was
about to perform at the Brown County Veteran's
Memorial Coliseum in front of 6,532 fans. It is
estimated, that this show generated 100,000 USD.
An audience recording of this concert was
released in 2005 by the czech label Memory
Records. The cover looks cheap, but the
recording sounds very good, considering the
source. The disc also features three bonus
tracks, that were taped on June 2, 1977 in
Mobile/Alabama.
Also Sprach Zarathustra
After the pre-show there is a break of almost 30
minutes, during which the fans can fill-up their
supply of popcorn, cola and merchandise. Then
the lights go down and the orchestra plays the
"Theme Of 2001". The band takes over with the
"Opening Riff" and there he is: Elvis Presley.
See See Rider
The opening tune doesn't sound as smooth as on
the album "Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In
Memphis". Even though it's still an acceptable
performance, the king appears powerless at
times.
I Got A Woman / Amen
Elvis sings the word "well" in several pitches,
James Burton "answeres" with his guitar. The
final "well" is sung astonishingly low, because
as a joke it was done by JD Sumner. The Ray
Charles hit also doesn't sound as lively as it
used to do, during "Amen" Elvis encourages the
audience to sing along with him. Of course the
king also presents some of his legendary
movements and gives Mr. Sumner another
opportunity to show off his bass-voice.
Love Me
Now Elvis welcomes the audience, mentions the
bright spotlights and explains their effect on
his physique. He sounds tired. "Love Me" is sung
the usual way, jokingly the king lets the backup
singers hold the final note until they have to
give up.
If You Love Me (Let Me Know)
The country pop is presented in a tired way. At
times Elvis is drowned out by the harmony
singers.
You Gave Me A Mountain
Here the king invests some more energy. He still
cuts some lines short, but he obviously knows
how to sell the song. At times his voice even
sounds impressive.
Danny Boy
Somewhat haltingly Elvis announces Sherrill
Nielsen, who takes over with a performance of
"Danny Boy". The previous year the song had been
released by Elvis on the album "From Elvis
Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee". Sherrill
interprets the classic completely different, but
very well. He obviously sings much more accurate
and with much more energy than his employer.
Meanwhile Elvis is sitting on a chair, taking a
break.
Walk With Me
The king's pause continues, because Sherrill
sings a second song.
Jailhouse Rock
Now Elvis explains, that there is one sound
system for the stage and another one for the
audience. Once again he sounds tired and
sluggish. Nevertheless he meets a song request,
at least he pretends to do so. Just very few
know, that the "Jailhouse Rock" was on the set
list anyway.
O Sole Mio / It's Now Or Never
Once again Sherrill Nielsen takes over, this
time to intone the Italian classic "O Sole Mio".
Elvis follows with "It's Now Or Never", which is
based on the traditional. At times he can be
heared breathing heavily, but still he manages
to belt out the chorus in an impressive way. The
previously mentioned sound system also pipes up,
in this case with a loud feedback.
Little Sister
Elvis continues with a breezy performance of
"Little Sister". The audience loves it and claps
along.
Teddy Bear / Don't Be Cruel
In contrast to the previous song, the medley is
nothing but pure routine. However, Elvis throws
scarfs in the audience and the ladies fall all
over themselve to catch them.
My Way
Now the king announces "My Way" and admits, that
he has to read the lyrics from a sheet. His
performance is not as smooth as on the album
"Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite", but therefore
Elvis injects more drama. Without doubt, he
still knows how to sell the song.
Introductions
Obviously tired and short of breath the king
introduces the members of his crew. Elvis
himself sings a shortened version of "Early
Morning Rain" and mumbles along to some solos of
his band mates. It's pure time killing.
The Hawaiian Wedding Song
Usually Elvis sings the power ballad "Hurt", but
today he obviously doesn't feel up to the
challenge. "The Hawaiian Wedding Song" is much
easier to sing and a sure crowd pleaser.
Nevertheless the king can be heard breathing
heavily.
Hound Dog
Elvis mumbles through the same four lines of
"Hound Dog" over and over again. Finally he
shakes to the brass sounds of the orchestra. The
fans love it, but for everyone else it's just
painful to watch.
Funny, How Time Slips Away
Now the king orders the house lights to be
switched on, which drives the ladies nuts. At
least in theory their idol is able to see them.
In the last few months Elvis has done without
the country ballad, but it's also quite easy to
sing and therefore a welcome addition.
Can't Help Falling In Love
Elvis changes the first line to "Wise men know,
when it's time to go". Otherwise he
performs the classic from "Blue Hawaii" in the
usual way. After the king has left, an announcer
says "Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the
building" and promotes the merchandising items,
that are offered in the venue's lobby.
An American Trilogy
(bonus song: June 2,
1977)
The bonus tracks were recorded on June 2, 1977
in Mobile/Alabama in front of 11,000 people. The
audience recordings sound more muffled than the
other one, but in general the quality is
listenable. Out of the blue Elvis wants to sing
"An American Trilogy". Even though the song is
quite complex and nobody is prepared, the band
and the orchestra manage an acceptable
performance. But the king sounds very insecure
and cannot compete with his previous renditions
at all. To make it worse, he starts to sing
during the trumpet solo and doesn't realize his
mistake, even though it sounds completely odd
and out of tune. Finally he stops the
performance and has the orchestra start over
again. This time he waits for the choir, before
he joins in himself. Obviously he is
embarrassed, because now he gives all he has and
delivers an astonishingly powerful finale. By
the way: This was the last time Elvis sang "An
American Trilogy".
Polk Salad Annie
(bonus song: June 2,
1977)
Tony Joe White's swamp rock was also presented
for the very last time. Elvis obviousl likes the
song, but his voice lacks aggression and power.
His movements look rather helpless and sluggish.
But the ladies scream nevertheless.
Unchained Melody
(bonus song: June 2,
1977)
Here Elvis accompanies himself on the piano. At
one point he appears to have forgotten the
lyrics, but otherwise it's a fine and vocally
strong performance.
Verdict
Even though Elvis obviously tries, he
isn't in the condition to deliver a good
show. He's on stage for an hour and almost
half of the time is eaten up by the
introduction of the band and solo
performances of Sherrill Nielsen. The bonus
tracks also display the bad state, the
singer was in at the time. However, the
audio quality is pretty good for an audience
recording.
