The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age

In 2005 Follow That Dream Records released a soundboard recording of El's midnight show on March 28, 1975. The compact disc also includes several bonus tracks, which had been recorded during the same Vegas season. The digipak is designed well and includes pictures, that were shot in March 1975 at the Las Vegas Hilton. By mistake the cover claims, that the show was recorded on March 30th.

Also Sprach Zarathustra

The concert starts with "Also Sprach Zarathustra". It soon segues into the "Opening Riff" and Elvis appears on stage. From Charlie Hodge he receives his guitar and walks over to the microphone.

See See Rider

Meanwhile the band seamlessly has moved on to "See See Rider", which the king sings with a lot of verve.

I Got A Woman/Amen

Now Elvis toys around with the word "well", but thankfully he keeps it short. The old Ray Charles hit is also presented with zest and the singer has fun to parody his moves from the 1950s. The ladies love it, even though his recent weight gain has taken away a lot of the sexiness. After the song, or the medley, has ended, Elvis gives his guitar back to Charlie and talks to the fans. One of them even is allowed to use his microphone.

Love Me

The standard "Love Me" gets a surprisingly solid outing, recently we've heared a lot of lackluster performances.

If You Love Me (Let Me Know)

During the "Elvis Summer Festival 1974" the king has started to sing Olivia Newton-John's country hit "If You Love Me (Let Me Know)". It's still on the program and I have to say, that Elvis does it better than the original artist.

And I Love You So

The king sticks to cover versions of more or less recent hits and sings Perry Como's "And I Love You So". Once again he does it very well and this time the point goes to Presley, too. Somehow he manages to make other people's songs his own and outclasses them.

Big Boss Man

Now Elvis raises the tempo and delivers a rockin' version of "Big Boss Man". He's really into the song and sings it much better than on his single from 1967.

It's Midnight

Half a year ago RCA released the single "It's Midnight" / "Promised Land". The people obviously preferred the b-side, recently Elvis even named an album after the song. Compared to the previous year he delivers "It's Midnight" a tad faster, but his performance still is full of emotion and his voice could not be any better.

Promised Land

Of course the king knows, what the fans want to hear and so he also does "Promised Land". It's not as good as the studio version, but also not very far from it.

Burning Love

After having performed an audience favorite, Elvis asks what the folks want to hear. One of the suggestions is "Trying To Get To You", but the king settles for "Burning Love". Even though it was a huge hit, the king always appeared reluctant to include the rocker in his set list. But now he has and it's performed much better than two years ago on the "Aloha" show. At the end Elvis even starts to shake and move!

Introductions

The introduction of the band takes him longer nowadays, but maybe he needs the break. He looks somewhat pale and has gained a lot of weight, in February he even was hospitalized. So I guess he might be not as well as he appears to be. With the exception of John Wilkinson everybody performs a solo and Elvis sings along to Burton's "What'd I Say".

My Boy

Freshly rested Elvis performs "My Boy", his current single. Back in late 1973 he had sung the ballad in Vegas, half a year later it appeared on the longplayer "Good Times". It took him until January 1975 to release the track on a 45. However, he sings it very well!

I'll Remember You

While singing "I'll Remember You" Elvis makes contact with the audience, well...the female part of it, and hands out scarfs and kisses. Suddenly a very young looking lady appears on the edge of the stage, so the singer precautionary asks her age. When she replies, that she'll be thirteen next Sunday, Elvis jokingly advises her to come back next Sunday. But of course she gets her kiss, too.

Let Me Be There

From his previous years' live record the king performs the country pop "Let Me Be There". It's played faster now and Elvis sounds more dynamic. It's his second cover version of a hit by Olivia Newton-John within not even 60 minutes, so I guess he really digs her music.

Hound Dog

Once again Elvis takes some time to communicate with the audience, then he segues into "Hound Dog". It seems to be the only song tonight, the king doesn't care about. However, the fans love it, no matter how lackluster the presentation might be.

An American Trilogy

With "Trilogy" the king returns to form. The patriotic tripple is performed faster than the previous years and therefore lost some of its charme. But it's still very good and Elvis proves the greatness of his voice.

Can't Help Falling In Love

The king bows out with just a few words and sings his usual closer "Can't Help Falling In Love". The band takes over with the "Closing Riff", the curtain comes down and Elvis is gone.

You Don't Have To Say You Love Me (bonus song: March 31st, midnight show)

The selection of bonus tracks starts with a solid rendition of "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me".

The Wonder Of You (bonus song: March 31st, midnight show)

It seems like Elvis wants to get done with "The Wonder Of You" as fast as possible. The ballad is played very fast and the king starts with the second verse. He also sings a tad sloppy.

Bridge Over Troubled Water (bonus song: March 31st, midnight show)

This one also cannot compete with the renditions from "That's The Way It Is" (1970) and "Elvis On Tour" (1972). But it's sung much better than "The Wonder Of You" and Elvis obviously cares for this song.

Little Darlin' (bonus song: March 31st, midnight show)

It seems to be a spontaneous idea to bring the song up. The performance is anything but perfect, but it's entertaining! Elvis and his guys obviously have fun with this silly song and it's a delight to see/hear it.

The Hawaiian Wedding Song (bonus song: March 31st, midnight show)

At first the singer appears to be somewhat unfocused, but then a nice rendition evolves.

Green Green Grass Of Home (bonus song: March 22nd, midnight show)

Elvis delivers a heartfelt performance of this great country ballad. He doesn't reveal, that it will be released on his forthcoming longplayer "Elvis Today".

Fairytale (bonus song: March 22nd, midnight show)

The same applies here. Obviously Elvis has decided to leave the promotion to the Colonel. His rendition of "Fairytale" is nothing but great. He sings with a lot of emotion and his voice could not be better. I dare to say, that this is the ultimate performance of "Fairytale".

You're The Reason I'm Livin' (bonus song: March 22nd, midnight show)

As we know today, this one was performed just a single time. So it's a happy coincidence, that this very show was taped by the sound engineer. The song obviously was rehearsed, but Elvis brings it up spontaneously. The performance is not perfect, but great to hear. "You're The Reason I'm Livin'" fits Elvis very well, so it's a pity, that he didn't keep it in the show or even record it in the studio.

Verdict

It's a very strong show with an up to date repertoire and an artist in fine voice and high spirits. The bonus songs are a welcome addition, especially the ones from March 22nd are great.
