On March 19th Elvis returned to Murfreesboro to perform in front of another 12,500 fans. This time he wore the "Blue Starburst Suit", another costume introduced during the "Elvis Summer Festival 1973" and to be sorted out after this tour.
Also Sprach Zarathustra
Once again the people have more or less enjoyed the pre-show and refilled their supplies of cola and popcorn during the intermission. The orchestra playes the "Einleitung, Oder Sonnenaufgang" from Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra", then the electric band takes over with the "Opening Riff" and Elvis enters the stage.
See See RiderAfter having picked up his guitar from Charlie Hodge, Elvis walks to the microphone and begins the show with a zesty version of "See See Rider".
I Got A Woman / AmenNow the king welcomes the crowd and sings the word "well" in different pitches, answered by James Burton's electric guitar. That's enough to make the women scream, which amuses Elvis. "I Got A Woman" is sung very well, as usual JD Sumner is given an opportunity to show off his mighty deep voice. Today the king pretends to have heared a feedback, so Mr. Sumner can repeat the stunt and produce even lower notes. A reprise of "I Got A Woman" follows, afterwards Elvis gives his guitar back to Charlie and accepts gifts from some fans at the edge of the stage. The king also toys a bit with the people on the backside by turning around and provoking strident reactions.
Love MeAs usual the ballad is used to hand out some scarfs. The turmoil causes a lady to fall off a platform, so Elvis asks, if everything is ok with her. Receiving a positive answer, he adds "What? OK, she's a member of the gymnast team...".
Trying To Get To YouWith "Trying To Get To You" the king has reached operating temperature. He belts out the chorus in impressive style and obviously enjoys what he's doing.
All Shook UpThe good ole' "All Shook Up" also is presented with lots of power. It's very fast and quite short, but enjoyable.
Steamroller BluesNow Elvis interrupts the oldie parade with "Steamroller Blues". He delivers it very well, even better than during previous years' "Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite" special.
Teddy Bear / Don't Be CruelUp next is a medley of "Teddy Bear" and "Don't Be Cruel". During the latter one he jokingly sings "please let's forget the past, before I kick your...". Just like "All Shook Up" the tunes are shortened and delivered in fast tempo, but they are done with drive.
Love Me TenderOf course Elvis uses the movie schmalz to make contact with the ladies, bestow them with kisses and scarfs. The reaction is unequivocal: The majority of the audience would be fine, if the king did nothing else. They certainly didn't come for the music.
Rock'n'Roll MedleyFive days ago Elvis continued with "Johnny B. Goode" and "Hound Dog". Today he settles for a medley of "Long Tall Sally", "Whole Lotta' Shakin' Goin' On", "Mama Don't Dance", "Flip, Flop & Fly", "Jailhouse Rock" and "Hound Dog". Of course the medley-format forces him to make the tunes sound more or less alike, but as a reminder of the past it works well and the singer obviously has fun performing it.
FeverDuring "Fever" Elvis drives the ladies over the edge, simply by moving his legs. But today he doesn't like the efforts of his bass player, at one point he can be heared saying "Hang in there, Duke".
Polk Salad AnnieWith "Polk Salad Annie" the king leaves the Golden 50s. He graces the swamp rocker with a selection of his patented moves and some karate figures. Referring to the nearby production plant he alters the lyrics and sings "Sock a little Volkswagen to me".
Why Me LordNow JD Sumner & The Stamps perform the gospel "Why Me Lord". Elvis himself joins the group during the chorus. Afterwards he says "I like that" and gives a short encore.
Suspicious MindsThe 1969 sales monster "Suspicious Minds" gets a zesty outing. Being in good mood Elvis ad-lips "here we go again...wipe it off your chin" and later hints to sing "oh shit" instead of "oh yeah".
IntroductionsJust like a few days ago, Elvis uses the introductions to joke a bit and to have fun with his group.
I Can't Stop Loving YouThe question "You know, what I can't do" leads into "I Can't Stop Loving You". In-between the king fools around a bit and also repeats the joke of singing "to live in Tennesee" instead of "to live in memory".
Help MeElvis introduces the next song by telling the audience, that he's just recorded it. Then he proceeds with a very good, heartfelt rendition of the religious tune.
An American TrilogyOf course the king cannot leave out "An American Trilogy". It's a good, vocally impressive performance. As he did last time here, he jokingly substitutes "Dixiland" with "Disneyland".
Let Me Be ThereSurprisingly "Let Me Be There" starts a bit rocky, but soon the performance becomes as smooth as expected. Once again Elvis offers a little encore.
Funny How Time Slips AwayNow the king wants the house lights to be turned on, so he can have a look at the crowd. But then he remembers, that it doesn't work here and the spotlights have to do the job. Once more he calls the procedure a psychedelic light show and sings "Funny How Time Slips Away". After having sung the the word "funny", he jokingly laughs in hysterical style.
Mystery TrainFive days ago Elvis called it a day after the country ballad, but now he wants to continue with the medley of "Mystery Train" and "Tiger Man". Unfortunately the tape runs out after some 45 seconds or so. As a result we have to do without the remainder of "Mystery Train", the following "Tiger Man" as well as the usual closer "Can't Help Falling In Love".
