The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age

In 2006 Follow That Dream Records released the first soundboard recording from this Vegas season. The album "I Found My Thrill" contains the dinner show from January 27th as well as some bonus tracks. The compact disc is housed in a 5" digipak, whose design is reminiscent of the Hilton's entertainment magazine "Now". The photos used on the cover are not from this very engagement, but I guess at the time not much material was available. The recording itself sounds fine, albeit there's a bit of overload here and there.

Also Sprach Zarathustra

The orchestra starts the show with the classical "Also Sprach Zarathustra", then the band takes over with the "Opening Riff" and Elvis appears on stage.

See See Rider

After having received his guitar from Charlie Hodge, Elvis throws himself into "See See Rider". He sounds much more energetic than during the previous year, obviously the break was necessary.

I Got A Woman / Amen

Elvis doesn't waste time and seques into "I Got A Woman". Once again his performance has much drive, it's comparable to the rendition in the movie "Elvis On Tour". Of course the king includes a few bars of the gospel "Amen". After a quick return to "I Got A Woman" Elvis throws his guitar to Charlie, welcomes the audience and jokingly hopes, that the mirrors on his suit don't drive the people crazy.

Love Me

The oldie "Love Me" is a routine performance. But Elvis delights the ladies by handing out scarfs.

Let Me Be There

Now Elvis covers Olivia Newton-John's "Let Me Be There". The country pop fits him well and he obviously likes this kind of music. Too bad, the it was released by Olivia, because the king does it much better.

You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling

After an absence of almost a year, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" is back on the set list. And it's a welcome return, because Elvis performs it just as powerful as on his Madison Square Garden album.

Sweet Caroline

The king follows with another song, that has been absent for quite some time. Compared to its previous outings "Sweet Caroline" is done very fast. After two minutes or so Elvis wants to sing another verse while the band moves on to the chorus. The king has to laugh about his mistake and quickly adjusts himself.

Love Me Tender

Especially for the ladies Mr. Presley sings "Love Me Tender", hands out scarfs and kisses some females. For them it's a dream come true, for the singer it appears to be nothing but a routine.

Rock'n'Roll Medley

I guess Elvis wouldn't have reached the status of a rock'n'roll king with a performance like this, but this collection of oldies seems to appeal more to him than the title song of his first movie. In detail the medley is made up of "Long Tall Sally", "Whole Lotta' Shakin' Goin' On", "You Mama Don't Dance", "Flip, Flop & Fly", "Jailhouse Rock" and "Hound Dog".

Fever

The king flirts with the ladies, drives them wild by doing not much more but moving his legs and obviously has fun.

Polk Salad Annie

This one reveals, what a grea bass player Jerry Scheff is. The new one does it well, but not as cool and easy as Mr. Scheff. Elvis certainly is aware of the situation, because he's given the solo to James Burton. The king still moves well, but he looks less elegant due to his recent weight gain.

Spanish Eyes

Elvis is out of breath while introducing his new vocal group Voice, who get a solo spot and sing "Killing Me Softly". When this album was released, Follow That Dream Records wasn't allowed to release the performance, so the compact disc continues with "Spanish Eyes". It's one of the tracks the king has recorded recently at Stax and it's a fine addition to the show.

Suspicious Minds

The man from Memphis performs "Suspicious Minds" since half a decade and the past years' renditions were quite tame. Today he invests much more energy and delivers the song very well.

Introductions

Elvis doesn't take too much time for the introductions. Jokingly he introduces his conductor as Arturo Toscanini, the new bass player is simply introduced as Duke. The king also mentions Mary Allen, the famous actor and comedian, who's in the audience tonight.

I Can't Stop Loving You

Just like "Suspicious Minds", this one is also presented with much more zest than in 1973.

Help Me

Now it's time for another new tune. He does a great job and presents the religious country song with a lot of emotion.

An American Trilogy

Of course a Presley show would not be complete without "An American Trilogy". The recent incarnation is done a tad faster than before, which takes away a bit of the flair. Here and there the king can't help to make some funny remarks. It's an entertaining performance and also a display of Elvis' great voice and the abilities of the orchestra and the choir.

Let Me Be There

Surprisingly the king does another version of "Let Me Be There", simply because he likes to sing it.  Even after two decades in the business the man hasn't lost the joy for music.

Can't Help Falling In Love

The king ends the show without loosing too many words. He sings the usual "Can't Help Falling In Love", the curtain comes down and a voice hawks the souveniers, that are sold in the lobby of the hotel.

My Baby Left Me (bonus song: January 28th, midnight show)

This is one of the new oldies of the season. Elvis makes fun of the old 1950s sound by holding his nose and making his voice sounding nasal.

Trying To Get To You (bonus song: January 28th, midnight show)

The SUN classic "Trying To Get To You" is brought up off-the-cuff. It's obviously not properly rehearsed, but it's fun to hear Elvis and the band having a good time and jamming along. Great stuff!

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (bonus song: February 1st, midnight show)

Even though Mr. Presley officially is in a relationship with Linda Thompson, he dedicates the song to his  girlfriend Sheila. That's brazen beyond believe! However, in contrast to Elvis' behavior the performance leaves nothing to be desired.

I Found My Thrill (bonus song: compilation)

During this season Elvis often combined "I Can't Stop Loving You" with "Blueberry Hill". He constantly fooled around with the lyrics, so the guys behind Follow That Dream Records (Ernst M. Jorgensen and Roger Semon) decided to compile the stuff and create a track called "I Found My Thrill". It's quite entertaining and a good display of the king's humor.

Verdict

Elvis appears to have recovered from whatever plagued him the previous year. He's energetic, in fine voice and good humor. It's a delight to hear him that way.
