The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age

The quadruple disc "Elvis On Stage - February 1973" was released in July 2024 by the UK-based label Memphis Recording Service and includes recordings of three concerts as well as the corresponding rehearsal. The four compact discs are accompanied by a hardcover booklet of 36 pages, which includes press articles, photos and short liner notes. The product looks quite sophisticated, much better than the releases of Sony's own collector's label Follow That Dream Records. Besides that, the products of MRS are available through several streaming platforms, too.

The set presents the recordings in chronological order. The first disc features the rehearsal, which was taped on January 25, 1973. It continues with the midnight show from February 2nd as well as the dinner show and the midnight show from February 3rd. The latter one was released in 2008 by FTD on an album called "I'll Remember You", the rehearsal appeared four years later under the name of "From Hawaii To Las Vegas". The other two live shows were known by many fans through several illegally issued compact discs. Because the copyright in Great Britain runs out after half a century, the UK-based MRS is free to use all the material without legal consequences or even having to pay anybody.

The rehearsal was taped with a simple cassette recorder, it's basically an audience recording without an audience. When FTD released the recording, it was running 5% too slow and made Elvis appear sleepier than he actually was. Well, even at the correct speed he doesn't sound too engaged, but at least the listener musn't fear the king is dozing off in the midst of the procedure. Studio D, whoever that is, also reduced the hiss and made the recording sound a bit more lively. The same applies to the live recordings. Here the speed always was correct and the quality was great for a soundboard recording, but still the new incarnation sounds more vital and the fake stereo breezes some atmosphere into the sonic experience. To make it short: It sounds mighty fine for what it is.

Verdict

The midnight show on February 2nd is very good, but on the next day Elvis acts quite subdued during both concerts. He still sings well, but doesn't work up any sweat. The packaging is done very well and the audio quality is an improvement over the previous outings of the material.
