In 2014 Sony's official collector's label
Follow That Dream Records released a double-disc
called "Destination USA", which featured a
soundboard recording of the dinner show from
September 4, 1972. The audio was a tad muffled
and there was a considerable amount of hiss.
Nine years later the copyright in Great Britain
ran out and so Memphis Recording Service Ltd.
was able to re-release the recording without
having to fear legal difficulties. The same
applied to a rehearsal session from August 4th,
which FTD had issued in 2012 on an album named
"3000 South Paradise Road".
The result is a new two-disc set called
"Closing Night 1972". As usual the sound
carriers are housed in a 5", stylishly designed
hardcover book. The 40 pages include liner notes
as well as photos from this Vegas stint as well
as pictures of memorabilia. But the most
important thing is the sound. Compared to the
FTD release there is a lot less hiss and the
artificial stereo effect takes away a lot of the
dullness. The rehearsal, which was taped via a
cassette recorder, also sounds less hissy
and more natural. Of course MRS cannot do
magic and everything still is far from
perfection, but nevertheless the improvement is
significant. Besides that, "Closing Night 1972"
is available on the streaming platforms, while
FTD still sticks to physical sound carriers.

Verdict
The king acts a bit tired at times, but
nobody can blame him, since this is his 63rd
concert in a row. The rehearsal session
features many interesting songs, some of
them were not performed during the "Elvis
Summer Festival 1972". The album in general
is a huge improvement over the FTD releases.
