The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age

The second performance, that was recorded and filmed for the "Elvis On Tour" project was the one in Richmond/Virginia on April 10, 1972. Even though it was a Monday, the Richmond Coliseum was sold out with 11,500 people.

Also Sprach Zarathustra

The main part of "The Elvis Presley Show" begins with the "Einleitung, Oder Sonnenaufgang" from Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra". But soon Ronnie Tutt plays a drum roll and leads the band into the "Opening Riff". Elvis walks on stage, wearing the "Red Pinwheel Suit", combined with the Gold Belt, given to him for his attendance record at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. This is the only red jumpsuit the king ever wore and he would do so just a couple of times.

See See Rider

As usual Elvis opens the concert with "See See Rider". He injects quite some energy.

Proud Mary

The second song of the night is a funky rendition of "Proud Mary".

Never Been To Spain

Elvis follows the CCR hit with "Never Been To Spain". Jokingly he turns the line "only made it up to Needles" into "only made it to Virginia".

You Gave Me A Mountain

The power ballad gets a strong outing, albeit not as great as yesterdays' version.

Until It's Time For You To Go

Elvis' latest single is performed very well. At the beginning the king once again fools around a bit and adds "Lord, I hope so" to the line "you're not a dream, you're not an angel, you're a woman".

Polk Salad Annie

Turning to Jerry Scheff Elvis says "Take it on!". Within a second the bass player starts to play the intro of "Polk Salad Annie". It's the first song of the evening, during which the king presents some of his patented moves. At the end he falls flat on the floor telling the audience "That's a funny looking thing up there, I hope that thing don't fall. I'd be flatter than a pancake!". Still lying on the ground he announces a medley of oldies, but goodies.

Love Me

Back on his feet again the king sings "Love Me", a ballad from his second longplayer "Elvis".

All Shook Up

"All Shook Up" is fast and short, but it fits the tempo of the show.

Teddy Bear / Don't Be Cruel

The same applies to this medley. Elvis and his crew have the foot on the gas.

Heartbreak Hotel

His first number one hit is delivered with a modern approach, Elvis obviously likes the song.

Hound Dog

During the introduction the king claims, that he had sideburns before The Stamps (the gospel group, that accompanied him) started to shave. Salaciously he adds, that it was also before The Sweet Inspirations (the female soul trio, which did the harmony vocals) were shaving. The performance itself is the usual one with Elvis repeating the same four lines over and over again. Nevertheless it's a nice reminder of the good ole' days.

Bridge Over Troubled Water

At the start the song is interrupted by some over-excited fans, but the performance soon turns into a serious and emotional rendition.

Love Me Tender

Of course Elvis uses the titel song of his first movie to kiss some ladies and bestow his disciples with a few scarfs.

It's Over

Now the audience is treated with something rare. In general "It's Over" is not performed all that often, during this very tour it was sung just once. Nevertheless it's well executed, Elvis is in fine voice and delivers a heartfelt rendition. Especially the finale is great.

Suspicious Minds

Up next is the king's last number one hit, "Suspicious Minds". There are several ad-libs, one of them is "Play it straight, man. I hope the suit don't tear". He's obviously referring to the fact, that this is the second song of the show, during which he presents some of his moves and karate poses.

Introductions

After having introduced his musicians and singers, Elvis mentions, that the concert is filmed for a movie.

For The Good Times

Elvis cues the band by saying "Don't look so sad". Of course everyone knows, that these are the first words of "For The Good Times" and soon the performance is underway. It's a fine rendition of this sad country ballad.

I Can't Stop Loving You

With "I Can't Stop Loving You" the king raises the tempo of the show. He obviously has fun singing the classic.

An American Trilogy

As usual these days "An American Trilogy" is the highlight of the concert. The band, the orchestra, the harmony singers and the lead vocalist - they are nothing but great!

Lawdy Miss Clawdy

Elvis continues with a fine rendition of "Lawdy Miss Clawdy", even though it's not as good as yesterdays' version.

Funny, How Time Slips Away

Now the king wants to look at his fans and has the house lights turned up. Jokingly he intones "Carry Me Back To Old Virginny" and tells the crowd, that he had been here 14 years ago...when he was a baby.  Then he sings "Funny How Time Slips Away".

Can't Help Falling In Love

Elvis bows out by saying "Y'know, we love to sing for you" and segues into "Can't Help Falling In Love". The band takes over with the "Closing Riff", the king poses with his cape and within a minute he's gone.
