The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age

From August 7th to 10th the group rehearsed at the Showroom Internationale, the place of the actual concerts. Here they were joined by Joe Guercio and his orchestra. MGM filmed the first of these sessions, the other ones were not interfered by the film crew. Unfortunately this session was recorded in simple mono sound with Elvis' voice much too loud in the mix. Besides that, many songs were not entirely recorded.

You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling

The band plays "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" and stops when Elvis enters the room. After a brief salutation the song is started again and the king joins in. For a short time he looses his step, but in general the performance works well.

You Don't Have To Say You Love Me

Elvis calls out the song title and jokingly adds "....just play well for me". Then he imitates John Wilkinson's rough voice. The song is started twice, because the king mixes up the lyrics. The second try works better, as usual Elvis alters the words and adds a bit of humor.

The Next Step Is Love

After a false start Elvis jokes a bit, but then he segues into the b-side of his forthcoming single. After singing "laughing in the rain" he facetiously laughs in hysterical style. Unfortunately the recording is faded soon afterwards, so we don't get to hear the complete performance.

Twenty Days And Twenty Nights

Elvis asks "Can we do..ah...can we do...ah...can we do Hound Dog?", but then he settles for another one of his new Nashville recordings. At one point the harmony vocals are rather uncoordinated, but otherwise the walkthrough works well. The finale is rehearsed once more.

Polk Salad Annie

After the new songs Elvis decides to freshen up "Polk Salad Annie". He cannot help but to joke here and there, but in general it's a more than solid rendition of the swamp rocker.

Oh Happy Day

Elvis intones "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen", then he starts to sing "Oh Happy Day". It obviously was planned for the show, because everyone knows their parts well.

I've Lost You

Now the king returns to the new songs, he just recorded in Nashville. Once again the recording is faded, so we don't get to hear all that much of the performance.

Mary In The Morning

The recording is faded in while Elvis jokes with The Sweet Inspiration. The Presley crew calls out for "Mary In The Morning" and James Burton starts to play. But the king explains "They don't tell you when to start". After some further joking and throwing water on the Memphis Mafia Elvis finally starts to sing "Mary In The Morning". The first try is cancelled after the king sang "nothing's quite as bitchin'" instead of "nothing's quite as pretty". The second attempt is a serious one, albeit once again not recorded in its entirety.

Sweet Caroline

"You guys have the chart on DON'T CRY DADDY, segways into IN THE GHETTO...and segways out of the ghetto into the suburbs...out of there into the whorehouse?" asks the king. Because the sheet music of the medley "Don't Cry Daddy" / "In The Ghetto" is not available, Elvis decides to give "Sweet Caroline" a try. As you might have guessed, the performance wasn't recorded completely.

Words

Elvis asks "Anybody got the words to the song called WORDS?". This time the lyrics are in place and so the Bee Gees hit can be performed.

Patch It Up

The rehearsal session ends with a rendition of "Patch It Up". Once again the recording is faded out before the performance is over.
