The filming began on July 14, 1970 at 12:00 am on MGM's Soundstage 1 in Culver City/California. At 6:00 pm the king and the crew called it a day. The main goal was to get used to each other and to establish a connection between the Presley camp and the MGM people. Most of the session was used for checking out demos. The recording also was done in a very rudimentary way. Not everything was caught on tape and the engineer just used a very basic 2-track setup.
Words
In the movie we see Elvis entering the soundstage, greeting everyone ("Good morning, Hollywood-camera") and talking about his band ("These are the backbone of my whole show"). This sequence cannot be heared here, the performance of "Baby What You Want Me To Do" wasn't caught on tape, too. The recording starts with Glen Hardin playing a few bars of "Words" and discussing with Elvis. The band joins them, but the king cancels the take by saying "My fault". He tries to sing from memory, but can't remember the lyrics. MGM didn't catch the complete "Words" session, bits and pieces are obviously missing.
You Don't Have To Say You Love MeNow Elvis and his band listen to demos of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me". Both songs were recorded by the king in June and he wants to present them in his forthcoming show. Parts of this scene can be seen in the re-make of "That's The Way It Is". The first try to perform "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" sounds very rough. Besides that the bad audio quality becomes more obvious here. Elvis' voice is heavily cliped, everything sounds dull and muffled. Afterwards the king and his group discuss the song, Glen Hardin is asked to play "big chords".
Polk Salad AnnieUp next is "Polk Salad Annie", the highlight of his current live album. The musicians have to follow Elvis' moves, so they need to keep an eye on him. Afterwards the singer checks out some more demos and intones "Sweet Carloline".
Bridge Over Troubled WaterAs written before, this is another new song. Elvis sounds very insecure and the band also doesn't know their parts too well.
You Don't Have To Say You Love MeThe actual session was continued with "I've Lost You", but the recording starts when the group prepared for the second walkthrough of "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me". Elvis fools around a bit, in general this second try works much better than the first one. To improve the performance a bit more, a third attempt follows.
The Next Step Is LoveJokingly the king intones "It's Over", then the recording jumps to "The Next Step Is Love", another new tune he recently recorded in Nashville. The song is not performed in its entirety, afterwards we hear some talking and joking as well as Elvis singing a bit of "Mary In The Morning". The recording ends with another rendition of "The Next Step Is Love", which sounds quite good. The real session continued with an instrumental piece and rehearsals of "Patch It Up" and "Mystery Train". Before everyone left, the king and his crew listened to the demo of "The Next Step Is Love".
