The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age
The album "August Reloaded", released by Touchdown in 2011, features an audience recording of the dinner show on August 21, 1970. It was made by Rick Rennie, who recorded several concerts of the king in astonishingly good quality. The compact disc is accompanied by a well designed booklet with liner notes and photos. As a bonus, the album also offers a performance of "I've Lost You", taped during the midnight show of the same day.
That's All Right
The recording starts with the orchestra entertaining the crowd. After a break the Presley band takes over with a dynamic "Opening Riff" and the king appears on stage. Charlie Hodge hands him his guitar and while the man is moving towards the microphone, his musicians segue into "That's All Right". It's a fast, powerful rendition and the perfect start for the concert.
I Got A WomanJokingly Elvis plays around with the word "well", then he starts to sing "Well, I said I got a woman". Some lines of the Ray Charles hit are delivered in low voice, which adds a special touch. Before he ends the tune, Elvis includes a short break and makes some comments about the screaming ladies, before he finishes the song off with an Elvis Ending.
Tiger ManNow the king wrongly claims, that "Tiger Man" was his second single. Maybe he's mixing it up with "Mystery Train". Well, that wasn't his second single either, but he recorded it for SUN and usualy sings it in a medley with "Tiger Man". However, he presents a driving rendition of the classic, albeit it's a little bit short, because Elvis doesn't sing any more of it than he does in the medley. Afterwards Elvis gives his guitar back to Charly, welcomes the audience to the Golden Nugget and introduces himself as Johnny Cash. He also claims to have performed under the name of Fats Domino, but lost some weight.
Love Me TenderFacetiously the king tells the audience, his first movie was "Gone With The Wind". Of course it was "Love Me Tender" and of course Elvis uses the song to kiss some of the ladies. He also makes fun of the song (he sings "...for my darling, I love you, till we both go blind") and comments the short dress of one of the ladies ("You almost had an outfit"). After all is said and done, Elvis tells the kissed ones, that he has the flu!
I Just Can't Help Believin'While "Love Me Tender" was nothing more than a circus act, the king sings "I Just Can't Help Believin'" in a serious and impressive way.
Sweet CarolineAfter having covered BJ Thomas, Elvis sings one of Neil Diamond's songs. In contrast to the version on his recent live album "On Stage - February 1970" some lines are emphasized by The Imperials' bass singer. The king also jokes a bit and sings "...and spring became the mattress" instead of "...and spring became the summer".
You've Lost That Lovin' FeelingSticking to other people's hits "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" is up next. But once again Elvis outclasses the original performer, makes the song his own and wrings out every ounce of emotion.
Polk Salad AnnieOf course everyone knows Tony Joe White's "Polk Salad Annie". But everyone should know the king's rendition as presented on the longplayer "On Stage - February 1970". Today he fools around a bit, which is quite funny. He also moves a lot and proves, that at 35 he's still in top condition. The ladies love every shake of his body and some of them can be heared screaming in delight.
Introductions / Johnny B. GoodeAfter the physical tour de force Elvis needs a break and uses it to introduce his band. James Burton even gets a solo and when he fires off "Johnny B. Goode", Elvis rocks along. Great stuff! Because it's his birthday, the king also sings "Happy Birthday" to him, which is a nice touch. As it turns out, Neil Diamond is in the audience. Elvis greets him and intones his hit "Holly Holy". The king also introduces his grandmother. Even though he's in the business for 15 years, today is the first time, she see's her grandson live on stage.
The Wonder Of You"I'd like to do now a few of the songs that made me...all 428 of them" says Elvis. Obviously he wants to sing some greatest hits, but then he makes up his mind and decides to do his recent hit "The Wonder Of You" first. The musicians are on their toes and play the song. Jokingly the king sings "...you give me hope and constipation" (instead of "consolation"), but otherwise it's a serious and powerful rendition.
Heartbreak HotelAs promised Elvis now turns to the old stuff. He fools around with the start of "Heartbreak Hotel", but the performance itself is very good and very entertaining.
One NightThe r&b classic is sung with zest, too.
Blue Suede Shoes / Whole Lotta' Shakin' Goin' OnNow Elvis turns to the rocker "Blue Suede Shoes" and spontaneously adds a bit of "Whole Lotta' Shakin' Goin' On". The whole thing sounds somewhat rocky, but it's great to see the king and his crew having fun and running at full throttle.
Hound DogTo the delight of the audience, the king fools around with the intro of "Hound Dog". Compared to previous renditions this one is quite short, because James Burton's guitar solo is missing. However, Elvis still presents the classic with a lot of drive!
Bridge Over Troubled WaterWith the smash hit by Simon & Garfunkel the king returns to more recent material. His interpretation of the ballad is different to the original, it's more dramatic. His voice sounds nothing but great and the performance also proves, how great the orchestra and the harmony singers are.
Suspicious MindsThe king raises the tempo and sings "Suspicious Minds". Just like during "Polk Salad Annie" he moves all over the stage and gives his all. One almost starts to sweat just watching him.
Can't Help Falling In LoveBeing completely out of breath, Elvis chats and jokes with the audience. Suddenly he says "It was a pleasure workin' for you, thank you very much!" and the band starts to play "Can't Help Falling In Love". The curtain comes down and the show is over.
I've Lost You (August 21st, midnight show)Just a few hours later Elvis returns on stage. During the midnight show he also performed his current single "I've Lost You". At one point he forgets the lyrics and sings a line or two of pure drivel. It's good to see, that even the best ones make mistakes.
The show offers a good mix of old and new material and is presented by a star at the peak of his powers.
