(C) Sony Music Entertainment /RCA Legacy
Up next is the dinner show from August 25, 1969. The performance of "In The Ghetto" was released by RCA on the album "From Memphis To Vegas / From Vegas To Memphis", a few months later "Runaway" and "Yesterday" followed on the longplayer "On Stage - February 1970". Posthumously BMG and Sony Music Entertainment used other tracks on the boxed set "Collector's Gold" (1993) and the extended cd-edition of "On Stage - February 1970" (1999). The company's own collector's label issued additional tracks on the compact disc, that accompanied the book "Writing For The King".
Blue Suede Shoes
The start of the concert is known from the "Collector's Gold" box, albeit without the count-in (or clapping-in).
I Got A WomanToday's rendition of the Ray Charles classic was also used on the aforementioned boxed set.
All Shook UpElvis tells the usual jokes and rocks through "All Shook Up".
Love Me TenderEven though the king uses the same gags night after night, he usually sounds as if the stuff just entered his mind. Today he delivers his skit in a somewhat business-like fashion. Of course the kissing of the ladies is routine, too. But Elvis obviously likes this part of the show.
Jailhouse Rock / Don't Be CruelNow the singer announces to sing some of his biggest records, before admitting that they all were about the same size. The usual lyric changes are back, Elvis also accepts a gift while singing the medley.
Heartbreak HotelHis first national number one hit is presented in modern, bluesy style. Of course Elvis jokes a bit throughout his perfromance.
Hound DogBy now the shorter version of the "romantic" story has become the norm. Nevertheless "Hound Dog" is presented as powerful as ever.
MemoriesAfter having sung "I Can't Stop Loving You" during both shows of the previous day, the king now returns to the usual procedure and performs "Memories". Back in 1993 BMG used the track on their boxed set "Collector's Gold".
Mystery Train / Tiger ManHaving delivered the ultimate performance of "Johnny B. Goode" yesterday, the king switches back to the medley of "Mystery Train" and "Tiger Man". One doesn't need to mention, that it's a great rendition by any means.
MonologueTo comply with the image of a typical Vegas entertainer Elvis offers a funny monologue and talks about his life and career.
Baby What You Want Me To DoThe skit is followed by a cool rendition of "Baby What You Want Me To Do".
Funny, How Time Slips AwayInstead of the usual "Runaway" Elvis presents another performance of the country ballad "Funny, How Time Slips Away". Compared to later live presentations the song is played slower and is sung with much more feeling. I like this performance very much. BMG used it on the boxed set "Collector's Gold", Follow That Dream Records later featured it as a bonus track on their collector's edition of the album "Elvis In Person".
RunawayPostponed is not abandoned and so the king sings "Runaway". Because of the lack of new material in February 1970 RCA borrowed this performance and used it on the album "On Stage". Back then James Burton re-recorded parts of his guitar track, but here we get to hear the song as it was taped.
WordsToday Elvis leaves out "Are You Lonesome Tonight" and sings another version of "Words" instead. I guess he didn't consider his previous performances to be satisfactory ones and so he tried again. Follow That Dream Records issued the track on the compact disc, which accompanied the book "Writing For The King".
Yesterday / Hey JudeJust like "Runaway", the ballad "Yesterday" was released on the album "On Stage - February 1970". Back then RCA left out the "Hey Jude" part of the medley. The fans had to wait until 1999, when the complete recording was issued on the the extended compact disc release of the album.
IntroductionsNow Elvis takes a minute or two to introduce his stage crew.
In The GhettoHe continues the program with "In The Ghetto". It was this very performance, that RCA later used on the album "From Vegas To Memphis / From Memphis To Vegas".
Suspicious Minds"This next song sould be out in a week sometime...it's already out, ok...it's called Suspicious Minds" announces the king. Then he delivers a rousing rendition of his latest single.
What'd I SayToday "What'd I Say" makes a return, but Elvis doesn't leave the stage. It's a straight performance, most likely to give RCA something to release without having to edit the track all that much.
Can't Help Falling In LoveWithout saying goodbye the king start to sing "Can't Help Falling In Love". The show is over and Elvis has three hours to relax before having to be on stage again.
