The ultimate site about the king of the analogue age

Even though the midnight show from August 24th was never released in its entirety, major parts of it are known. "Are You Lonesome Tonight" and "Johnny B. Goode" were released in 1969 on the album "From Memphis To Vegas / From Vegas To Memphis". In the early 1980s RCA put "In The Ghetto" on the boxed set "Elvis Aron Presley" and "Baby What You Want Me To Do" was featured on "Platinum - A Life In Music" in 1997. Finally Sony's own collector's label Follow That Dream Records put "Blue Suede Shoes", "I Got A Woman", "All Shook Up", "Love Me Tender", "Jailhouse Rock" / "Don't Be Cruel", "Heartbreak Hotel", "Hound Dog", "Yesterday" / "Hey Jude", "Suspicious Minds" and "Can't Help Falling In Love" on the bonus cd, which accompanied the book "Writing For The King".

Blue Suede Shoes

The musicians play the intro, the king enters the stage and rocks through Carl Perkins' signature tune "Blue Suede Shoes".

I Got A Woman

Mr. Presley sings the word "well", but when he's answered by his harmony singers he jokingly says "Ah, shut up!". Then he delivers a rockin' "I Got A Woman".

All Shook Up

Once again the king feels as if his horse just left and claims, the show would taper off to nothing. Of course it does not, but continues with a zesty "All Shook Up".

Love Me Tender

After the by now well known jokes Elvis kisses the ladies and sings bits and pieces of "Love Me Tender".

Jailhouse Rock / Don't Be Cruel

Once again the king keeps the introduction shorter, but can't help to sing "you feel like you'd been had" instead of "something that I might have said". During the bridge between "Jailhouse Rock" and "Don't Be Cruel" Elvis repeates the line "dancin' to the jailhouse rock" once too often, but it isn't really a mistake.

Heartbreak Hotel

During his rendition of "Heartbreak Hotel" the king does without the "horny"-joke. In the end RCA needs something to release on the planned live album.

Hound Dog

Mr. Presley keeps the introduction short, but belts out the rock'n'roll song in his usual style.

I Can't Stop Loving You

Just like a few hours earlier Elvis substitutes "Memories" with "I Can't Stop Loving You". The performance works much better, but then he suddenly sings "I won't stop loving you" while the harmony singers stay with "I can't stop loving you".

Johnny B. Goode

The Chuck Berry classic is also still there and this time even better than during the dinner show. It's pure dynamite, without doubt the best performance of "Johnny B. Goode" you'll ever hear. By the way: Before the track was released on "From Memphis To Vegas / From Vegas To Memphis" James Burton re-recorded parts of his guitar playing and Elvis did some vocal repairs. However, to these ears the original recording rocks like hell and could have easily been released without any doctoring.

Monologue

After the two new songs Elvis sits down for the usual monologue about his life and career.

Baby What You Want Me To Do

The r&b track "Baby What You Want Me To Do" gets a cool outing. Love it.

Runaway

Elvis announces "A few years ago a guy by the name of Del Shannon had out a record called Runaway, I'd like to do that for you". It's another very good performance and the song fits Mr. Presley well.

Are You Lonesome Tonight

Without any announcement Elvis segues into "Are You Lonesome Tonight". On the album "From Memphis To Vegas / From Vegas To Memphis" the introduction of "Love Me Tender" was used, in which the king claims to have recorded the tune in 1927.

Words

The show is continued with "Words", another new song. It's a very good rendition, which easily could have been the master.

Yesterday / Hey Jude

The same can be said about this medley. "Yesterday" is sung in a serious and heartfelt way.

Introductions

After a zip of Gatorade the king introduces his musicians and singers.

In The Ghetto

Elvis continues with a great performance of "In The Ghetto", his great commercial comeback.

Suspicious Minds

The ballad is followed by a rousing rendition of "Suspicious Minds". At the beginning he has to laugh, but then he's attacking the song in grand style.

Can't Help Falling In Love

Leaving out the usual "What'd I Say" Elvis suddenly says "You are a beautiful audience, really beautiful, thank you" and starts to sing "Can't Help Falling In Love". The golden curtain comes down, the show is over.
